Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our March 2026 archive. It reviews the announcement and its infrastructure planning implications; product plans described at the time may have changed.

The development

Cisco’s 16 March 2026 announcement expanded its Secure AI Factory work with NVIDIA across centralised and edge environments. It described infrastructure choices intended to simplify deployment and operation. For physical infrastructure teams, the relevant distinction is the environment in which the equipment will run: a controlled data hall and a remote edge location have different installation and service constraints.

Practical implications

The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.

A repeatable design is valuable only if it fits the site. Before extending an AI service to an edge location, assess the communications enclosure, cable routes and technician access. Document who owns the connection between the central service and the edge equipment. This creates a practical boundary for troubleshooting when an application depends on several teams.

What to review

  • Survey edge sites rather than assuming data-centre conditions exist everywhere.
  • Document the demarcation between local cabling, carrier services and central infrastructure.
  • Choose a serviceable layout with labelled connections and an agreed replacement procedure.
