Google introduces Ironwood as an inference-focused TPU
Archive focus: April 2025 · Prepared 17 October 2026 · XConnect FZE

Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our April 2025 archive. It reviews the announcement and its infrastructure planning implications; product plans described at the time may have changed.
The development
Google introduced Ironwood on 9 April 2025 at Cloud Next. It described the seventh-generation TPU as its first designed specifically for inference, with configurations spanning 256 to 9,216 chips. The announcement placed Ironwood within Google Cloud’s broader AI Hypercomputer approach.
Practical implications
The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.
Inference is the part of an AI service that users experience repeatedly. Businesses assessing a new platform should connect technical capacity with service goals such as response time, concurrency and cost per completed task. A platform announcement provides a candidate for evaluation; it does not establish that every application will benefit equally.
What to review
- Use the same representative requests when comparing infrastructure options.
- Check how the application handles bursts of demand and slow responses.
- Confirm regional availability, data handling and operational support for the chosen service.
