Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our September 2024 archive. It is a technical review, not a report of a launch in that month.

Technical context

This technical retrospective examines the distribution areas that organise data centre cabling. Fluke Networks describes entrance, main, horizontal and equipment distribution areas, with optional intermediate or zone areas in some designs. These terms help teams describe where services enter, where connections are distributed and how equipment connects. This is a technical reference, not a September 2024 product announcement.

Practical implications

The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.

A labelled floor plan is useful only when it agrees with the rack and port records used by operations. Before adding capacity, walk the route with the installation and facilities teams. Resolve ownership of shared spaces and access arrangements while changes are still inexpensive. A common naming scheme can make subsequent moves much easier to review.

What to review

  • Create one agreed naming scheme for rooms, racks, panels and ports.
  • Identify the owner and access procedure for each distribution area.
  • Keep drawings and the connection register together in the handover package.
