Corning and Lumen highlight fibre demand between AI data centres
Archive focus: August 2024 · Prepared 17 October 2026 · XConnect FZE

Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our August 2024 archive. It reviews the announcement and its infrastructure planning implications; product plans described at the time may have changed.
The development
On 1 August 2024, Corning and Lumen announced a supply agreement for next-generation fibre-optic cable supporting AI-related data centre connectivity. The agreement linked higher-density cable supply with Lumen’s US network expansion. It illustrates how AI infrastructure demand extends beyond servers and internal rack connections into the networks joining facilities.
Practical implications
The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.
For a regional business, the lesson is to distinguish a fast internal network from reliable connectivity between sites. Inter-site service depends on the carrier, physical route, diversity and repair arrangements as well as advertised bandwidth. Two purchased services can still share a vulnerable section of infrastructure, so the delivery route deserves explicit discussion.
What to review
- Ask carriers to explain physical route diversity and common points of failure.
- Compare service recovery commitments and escalation contacts as well as bandwidth.
- Map the applications that must continue operating during an inter-site outage.
