Data centre cable management belongs in the efficiency discussion
Archive focus: July 2024 · Prepared 17 October 2026 · XConnect FZE

Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our July 2024 archive. It reviews the announcement and its infrastructure planning implications; product plans described at the time may have changed.
The development
Panduit’s 29 July 2024 technical article discussed the relationship between cabling, maintainability and sustainability in multi-tenant data centres. It described roles for both fibre and copper, including copper connections supporting powered devices and sensors. Its central planning point was to consider physical connectivity alongside space, cooling and operational requirements.
Practical implications
The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.
Cable management is a practical facilities decision. A rack that is easy to service reduces the temptation to disturb working connections during a change. Efficiency claims should still be measured at the facility: replacing a cable does not establish a particular energy saving. A useful improvement programme starts with a route survey and repeatable operational measurements.
What to review
- Review congested routes and remove abandoned cabling only through an approved change process.
- Keep service access and equipment airflow requirements visible on rack drawings.
- Measure the result of changes instead of assuming a generic percentage saving.
