Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our April 2024 archive. It reviews the announcement and its infrastructure planning implications; product plans described at the time may have changed.

The development

On 16 April 2024, Microsoft and Abu Dhabi-based G42 announced a $1.5 billion strategic investment by Microsoft. The announcement linked the investment to AI development and global expansion. It was a significant UAE technology-market development, placing enterprise AI and cloud collaboration at the centre of the partnership.

Practical implications

The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.

For UAE infrastructure teams, the useful planning question is how a business will reach the services it intends to use. A regional cloud investment does not remove the need to assess on-site connectivity, carrier access and resilient building backbones. Compare the planned application demand with the physical routes and operational support available at each business location.

What to review

  • Document the data locations and support arrangements for each proposed cloud service.
  • Separate announced investment plans from services that can actually be ordered.
  • Compare a small production pilot with the existing process before expanding usage.
