OFC 2024: denser fibre and preconnectorised data centre cabling
Archive focus: March 2024 · Prepared 17 October 2026 · XConnect FZE

Retrospective: This article was prepared on 17 October 2026 for our March 2024 archive. It reviews the announcement and its infrastructure planning implications; product plans described at the time may have changed.
The development
Corning’s 26 March 2024 OFC preview highlighted preconnectorised data centre distribution and higher-density ribbon cable. Its EDGE Distribution System and RocketRibbon cable with Flow Ribbon Technology addressed two practical pressures: installing connections faster and accommodating more fibre in constrained pathways. These were vendor product developments, not a requirement to replace every existing installation.
Practical implications
The following is XConnect’s planning interpretation.
For a UAE data centre expansion, the first question is whether the existing route can accommodate the planned connections and maintenance access. Factory-terminated assemblies can simplify installation, but their lengths and breakout positions must match the surveyed layout. A small error repeated across many racks can create considerable excess cable or a costly shortage.
What to review
- Survey the complete route, including vertical rises and entry points, before ordering assemblies.
- Compare usable pathway capacity and access for repairs, rather than fibre count alone.
- Agree the labelling, inspection and acceptance records before installation starts.
